Warning about dangerous consequences of use of Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS)

29.01.2016

Due to increased public interest, Agency for Medicinal Products and Medical Devices of Croatia (HALMED) emphasizes once again that the product under the name Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS), sold on the Internet and through adverts, can cause serious and life-threatening consequences.

We remind that HALMED already warned the public in October 2010 of serious consequences of use of this solution and reported that this product has neither been authorised as food, dietary supplement or medicinal product in Europe, nor in Canada or the United States.

According to the available information, MMS solution contains 28 % of sodium chlorite (NaOCl₂) and is usually packaged with citric acid, with which it is mixed before use. On the product packaging, it is stated that by mixing sodium chlorite and citric acid chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) is created, to which a broad spectrum of scientifically unsupported claims of therapeutic effects is attributed. The specified chemical substances have various industrial purposes - they are used as disinfectants and pesticides as well as bleachers in textile and paper industry. They are also used for fracking - the procedure of fracturing rocks in order to extract gas and oil.

From 2010 to the present day, warnings concerning this product have been issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as well as regulatory bodies of numerous countries: US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Canadian government department for health (Health Canada), German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM), Australian regulatory body for medicinal products (Therapeutic Goods Administration, TGA) et al.

The regulatory bodies mentioned above have received reports of serious adverse reactions caused by the use of MMS solution, among which are: symptoms of poisoning, life-threatening low blood pressure from dehydration, methemoglobinemia (an illness in which hemoglobin appears in oxidized form and cannot bind oxygen), anuria (decreased output of urine) and hemolytic anemia (decrease of hemoglobin concentration in blood), respiratory problems, abdominal pain, burning pain in throat, persisting vomiting, diarrhea, nausea. The German regulatory body (BfArM) also states that, depending on concentration, chlorine dioxide can cause irritations, but also skin and mucous burns.

HALMED appeals to all users of MMS solution to report every suspicion of adverse reaction to this product.

Adverse reactions can be reported via online application, available at the HALMED portal, or via Adverse Reaction Notification Form, which should be filled out by hand or on a computer and sent to the address:
