HALMED participates in the 5th public educational campaign for the promotion of rational use of antimicrobial medicines - JEKA
The Agency for Medicinal Products and Medical Devices (HALMED) participates as a sponsor and participant of the 5th Public Educational Campaign on Promotion of Rational Use of Antimicrobial Medicines - JEKA. The main goal of this campaign is to reduce by means of a public campaign, the unnecessary and inappropriate use of antibiotics.
JEKA is being implemented in accordance with the National programme for the control of antimicrobial resistance to antibiotics for the period from 2009 to 2014 for the fifth time in continuation in Rijeka and the Primorsko-Goranska County. From this year also regional centres like Osijek, Rijeka, Split and Zagreb will be involved during January, February and March 2013. The JEKA action campaign carries out an intensive education of health care professionals and wider public on the appropriate and rational use of antimicrobial medicines in treatment of milder respiratory infections.
HALMED carefully monitors the use of antibiotics in Croatia, calls upon a rational and appropriate use and promotes the raise of public awareness on resistance, hence an incorrect and excessive prescription of antibiotics as well as their inappropriate use increase the antimicrobial resistance to antibiotics and increase the risk for development of other diseases.
HALMED calls upon all doctors and patients to prescribe and use antibiotics responsibly and consciously, bearing in mind the following: antibiotics are intended to treat bacterial infections, but not the viral ones; antibiotics are not used to treat a flu, cold or every single throat ache; antibiotics are not used to reduce a fever; antibiotics should be taken only upon doctor's prescription and the prescribed dose should be administered entirely in equal time intervals.
In the For patients part of HALMED's webpages, there is a subcolumn Use antibiotics responsibly and consciously dedicated to rational use of antimicrobial medicines.
